not a lot of old-ass movies hold up in terms of comedy but sleeping beauty is fucking hilarious. “this is the 14th century.” “that’s because it’s on you dear.” the king at the end being confused af. fucking amazing

whencartoonsruletheworld

ok yeah im watching it again and nobody ever points out but. when merryweather says “you can’t sew and she’s never cooked” that like highkey implies that merryweather was the one in charge of actually taking care of the fucking kid which is hysterical. if merryweather was the main parental figure it’s a wonder aurora isn’t down for murder 24/7

whencartoonsruletheworld

see it’s easy to say “flora fauna and merryweather are a polyam couple” but tbh i think just flora and fauna are married, they both seem vaguely maternal towards merryweather, who in turn seems a lot younger and less experienced. so i have the headcanon that over in the fae realm these two were put in charge of training merryweather as their fae apprentice or whatever which somehow makes “merryweather was the one to take care of aurora” even FUNNIER. imagine you’re trying to train under these two powerful fairies and then before you know it you’re in the middle of the woods raising a baby and it turns out that without their wands your mentors are useless lesbians who don’t know how to cook. no wonder she’s so pissed all the time

whencartoonsruletheworld

i never liked the criticism that “aurora doesn’t do anything she only has like 10 lines that’s not #feminist” because. the main characters of the movie are the fairies, she just happens to get marketed more nowadays cause of the disney princess lineup, if you actually watch the movie it’s clear she’s not the protagonist, neither is phillip, i think he has roughly equal screentime to her. gender equality they’re both useless

but anyway when disney was doing that thing where they made one-shitbillion sequels they have serious untapped potential in post-movie aurora main character. because listen. listen. first of all she went through the most wild life-changing shit all in like two hours so she’s gonna be dealing with the fallout from that

but more importantly. girl was raised in the WOODS. she runs around barefoot petting wild animals and eating shit she picked up off the ground. she now lives in a castle as the future monarch. WHERE is my comedy sequel about that. where the FUCK is it. where is my scene of the servants and royals like “we’re so happy our beloved, perfect princess is finally back :)” and then she walks in covered in mud, smelling like riverwater, carrying a live fish and saying “i caught dinner” phillip sees nothing wrong with this

prince phillip who has spent all his life hunting as one of the boys(TM) and has never spent a day with a girl in his life thinks this is fine and cool and actually he's so relieved he can actually relate to his wife because that party for aurora's return was in fact his pseudo debutante and things were lookin real shaky for him until the dragon appeared they're both himbos your honor they are purely head empty just vibes stop eating my q

This...  This place thirsts for color.  It’s a stylized set designed for an ultraviolent movie where the protagonist rips and tears through an absurd number of sanitized, faceless goons, until the whole place is stained red with blood.

Or, if you really wanted to get spicy, it wouldn’t always be red.  Go absolutely feral; paint this place in rainbow blood,

What is it about fics then, where characters always, ALWAYS, have a spare toothbrush conveniently just hanging about in bathroom cupboards for that time someone is, usually unexpectedly, staying the night?

I have lived a few decades now, and I have never known anyone who keeps spare toothbrushes. Is it really common??

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):

- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue

- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS

- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria

- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!

- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better

- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag

- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag

- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes

- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later

- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users

- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing

- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

naryrising

A couple clarifications/additions to the above and a few more points of my own:

  • Subscriptions go out once an hour (unless there's something causing a delay in emails). If you update your work 5 minutes before that batch of subscriptions go out, the subscription notification will show up in 5 minutes. If you update 5 minutes after subscription emails go out, you're waiting until the next batch (approximately) 55 minutes later. It's not entirely random or impossible to predict, just don't freak out if your subscription email doesn't arrive 1 minute after an update. (Now, what your email provider does with it once it's sent is another issue entirely, and not one AO3 can control.)
  • Kudos emails are sent out once a day, with all kudos for the previous 24 hours. Don't expect an email for every single kudos you get. Comment emails, on the other hand, go out basically immediately.
  • AO3 isn't just a non-profit, it's entirely run by volunteers who are also fans. That means if you contact the Support or Abuse teams, for instance, you're going to be answered by an actual human being who is likely relatively familiar with what you're talking about, and is not going to be shocked by fandom being fandom. If you're tagging works, the tags are going to be handled by a volunteer who is familiar with that fandom. It's not a faceless corporation, it's run by other fans, who are volunteering to help run it in their spare time without pay and usually without any kind of thanks or acknowledgment of their work.
  • Essentially everything on AO3 that involves a number is cached. This means that it doesn't update immediately. This means that the site can stay up and responsive under the huge amount of traffic it gets, which it could not do if it had to update every single hit and kudos in real time. So don't stress if your newly-posted fic has 0 hits and 2 kudos, which is haha impossible right? Except that hits update more slowly than kudos, so just give it an hour or so and it will catch up. Likewise don't stress too much about whether your OTP's tag has 1262 works or 1263 works - the number will update eventually.
  • If you want to be able to sort and filter and keep track of the things you've read, USE BOOKMARKS. Subscriptions will deliver you a notice when a work or series or user updates, but you can't filter it or sort it. Marked for Later is useful but if you don't actually go and look at those things, you'll forget about them and it will get unmanageable. History will record everything you view, but again, you can't filter it or search it. You can filter and search bookmarks by the tags on the work (the fandom, characters, tropes, etc added by the author) OR by bookmark tags that you create and add to your bookmark. You could make a bookmark tag of "Best OTP fics" and tag your faves to easily find them again. You could make a bookmark tag of "To read later" and peruse it when you want something new to read.
  • Bear in mind, in relation to the above, that people can see your bookmarks unless you choose to make them private. That means authors will see what you're saying in the notes and tags unless you make your bookmarks private.
  • Don't link your ko-fi or patreon or paypal in your work notes/profile. Don't be like "here's where you can buy my published novels!" Just don't do it! Don't pretend that since you just said "you can buy me a coffee lolol" it's okay, as if the human beings mentioned above who will be reviewing your work if it's reported won't know what that means. Just don't solicit money or merchandise sales on the Archive, it's against the TOS. AO3 is a noncommercial space.
  • "Blocking" prevents someone from commenting on your works or responding to your comments. "Muting", which is still in development, will be what prevents you from seeing someone else's works in your search results. These are separate things, don't expect one to do the other.
  • You don't need to tag with every variation on a tag to make your work show up - this isn't tumblr. If you tag with "A/B" in the relationship field, you don't need to also tag with "B/A" and "SmushnameforAB". Your tag will get wrangled (linked) to the 'canonical' version (the version that AO3's tag wranglers have made the primary one). You don't need to pick from the tags in the dropdown menu if there isn't one that suits your needs - just enter what you want to use.

Also: you can post fanart, vids, audio or ANY MEDIA relating to transformative work there. I’m always a little wry that fanartists are forever hopping from site to site getting things taken down when they could, you know, archive it on a place where they won’t be blocked for female presenting nipples.

alexseanchai

images, audio, and video do have to be hosted on a different site and embedded on AO3 still; I believe the lack of server space / bandwidth / hosting interface for such things is one of the reasons AO3 is still in beta

mormon kids under the age of 18 being told their church is a cult

image

mormons 18-24 after they go through their endowment ceremony and receive their new name and secret clothing and learn the secret handshakes and passwords and realize everyone around them has been secretly doing this the whole time and now theyre going to be sent away from their family for 2 years where they will literally not be allowed to be alone for 1 second of the day except to go to the bathroom and they have no idea how to get out of what they just got into

image
dredsina

image

one of the only perks of being a mormon woman is that i didn’t get my endowment at age 19 and i had a little extra time to mature and be out on my own. that’s all i needed to make a clean break and i got out at 21 before i wouldve gotten my endowment.

kittleimp

wait what? can anyone elaborate on this? because I had no idea this was a thing

dredsina

basically when youre a mormon kid growing up you realize your church is a little strict but you’re like whatever. i have friends at church because i go to church 6 days a week and everyone around me is affirming that this is the right thing to do and we have special knowledge no one else has otherwise everyone would be like this. so youve gotta go teach them & it’s the greatest thing in the world to be a missionary. also the temple is beautiful and amazing and spiritual and holy and everyone wants to go there. but it’s a secret! :) because it’s holy and sacred

then if youre a boy and u turn 18 they’re like wow amazing!!! you get to go on a mission and be like all the great men around you!! and now you get to go through the temple! so #blessed!

and then you go through the temple and all the above mentioned SECRET CULTY SHIT happens (EXPLANATION HERE http://mormoncurtain.infymus.com/topic_templeceremonies.html) and youre shipped off to a strange place where everything you eat, wear, go, listen to and do is controlled, and you’re not allowed to talk to your family or friends (except through a once-a-week email) and you literally are being watched by your companion at all. times.

some might say “you can leave at any time” but consider that i never went on a mission and i never went through the temple and i still consider leaving the mormon church the hardest thing i ever did. you have no social network outside the church. you are lacking major knowledge and skills. you have to grapple with the fact that you may never see your family again.

chortletortoise

I’m reblogging this again bc I have Thoughts.

Leaving is such an isolating experience. No one inside wants anything to do with you anymore and no one outside understands the scale of messed up that Mormonism is. Like it’s easy to point and laugh at the ridiculousness, but it’s literally a cult. There’s so much trauma involved and there’s trauma in leaving.

People on the outside don’t understand how hard it is to leave. I grew up where all my friends were catholic and are no longer religious and they’re like “well everyone hates church, you just stop going” but Mormonism isn’t like that at all. For starters I had to get a lawyer involved to leave and then the ostracization from the entire community that nurtured me growing up was just the cherry on top. It’s effectively being shunned. Everyone you were forced to call sister and brother growing up no longer wants anything to do with you. And you deserve it, because you shouldn’t have fallen for the anti-Mormon lies.

Leaving The Church was the hardest thing I ever did and my family accepts me so I’m a lucky one. But they still ardently adhere to the institution that hurt me and has resulted in the deaths of people I love. I will never understand.

smallest-feeblest-boggart

“There’s so much trauma involved and there’s trauma in leaving.”

It’s easy for people looking in from the outside to forget this. Thank you for the reminder. Can anyone recommend resources for young Mormons looking to explore their options?

periwinklepromise

Please note: this post will be directly addressed to those hypothetical young Mormons

If you know you’re ready to leave, use quitmormon.com. It’s run by the guy from reddit who is now famous in exmormon circles for offering absolutely free legal services to anybody who needs help leaving. You can give your church id number if you know it, but it’s not required (I never memorized mine, and I sure wasn’t going to ask for it). He takes care of everything. This keeps TSCC (the so-called church) from getting all your latest info and keeps them from hassling you or harassing you. They have to talk to your lawyer instead. Pre 2015, it felt almost impossible to try to leave, but it’s a lot easier now! The years of picketing General Conference to force an excommunication trial are over!

Find a support system. Lean on your friends that have never been mormon, any family members who left, anyone you know who left. I’m an exmormon happy to answer any questions, and I’m sure there are plenty others in the notes who would be super willing to be supportive too. Exmormon groups are many and varied now, and it’s best to find the one that vibes for you. There’s a subreddit that’s popular, but I personally used - and I know this sounds weird, since I don’t have kids - a forum called Mormonism & More on the site babycenter.com. It was started several years ago by some mormons who had questions they weren’t allowed to ask on the normal mormon board (because that board required uplifting, mormon-approved answers at all times). It’s since shifted to ex-mormons or people who want to leave but can’t right now because of family situations. Even though the threads were years old, I spent weeks on that forum, reading about what other people had gone through and how they got through it, and to me, that was super helpful.

Research the culty stuff at your own peril. I liked learning about that stuff for a really long time, because I felt learning about all those secrets (I especially liked learning about the truth of the Book of Abraham) … it helped me feel valid in my choice. It helped me keep in mind that this was something that I had escaped, something that had wanted to hurt me. Missing your abuser doesn’t mean you should go back, it means you should keep moving forward. Missing your cult has the same solution. Lots of people fell for the “we’re totally not a cult!” line by TSCC. Some of them will not offer sympathy. If you want to watch the hidden camera videos of endowments and other temple stuff, I would super super recommend you have a trusted friend watch them with you. And bring comfort food. You’ll probably need it.

TSCC put out a series of essays on controversial (read: faith-killing, eye-opening, omg how could I have ever supported the people who did this) issues in mormon history. They are the Orthodox LDS pre-approved responses to a lot of the more incriminating accusations that have been leveled at TSCC over the years. They should be hosted on TSCC website somewhere, and would have been posted around or after 2015. They may reaffirm your faith now that you know TSCC’s defense, but they may push you right out the door. (Or break the shelf? Do Mormons still use the shelf analogy, or is that retired now?)

Lots of mormons become atheists after leaving. Many join mainstream xian churches. Some become witches, some study every religion they can get their hands on, some try to go back and realize all the magic (or holy spirit, if you prefer) is gone. Don’t think you have to know right away. Some people throw away or burn all their mormon stuff, some people keep it to show their kids, but again, you don’t have to make that decision right away. Some people call TSCC a cult after they leave, myself included, but you don’t have to if it makes you uncomfortable or it it doesn’t feel true to your experience.

Look up religious trauma syndrome. It’s real. The pain you will probably feel is real, the grief you will probably feel is real, and in many ways, you may have to mourn the death of what you were always told Life Will Be For You.

And learn that the world is not half as evil as TSCC told you. Your coworkers who drink a beer at the end of the day are not evil or abusive. Your friends who wear sleeveless shirts are not evil or promiscuous. You’re allowed to wear short shorts! You’re allowed to drink coffee! You’re allowed to ask questions in a faith community without being silenced or condemned! You’re allowed to not want kids! There’s a lot of unlearning here.

TLDR? You have options. You have freedom. Find nonmormon friends who will support you. Be kind to yourself.

justslowdown

People joke about Mormons but this is the first time I’ve seen anything at all directed towards people who need to get out.

I had a high school friend turned college roommate who left, moved 4 hrs away, and I had to lie to people who showed up repeatedly that he wasn’t home. That’s just the smallest outside perspective of this. They kept coming.

It is a cult. It operates by manipulating people. My aunt, who also left, converted from Catholicism when she was a single mother in her 20s who needed help. The church gave her a network of tangible support and got her through a vulnerable, scary time in her life–and used that
